Nancy Hayes is one of a handful of time tested, real deal casting directors in town. There are many who say they can, but few who really do, and have the track record to show it. Nancy is one. She and her fantastic team call a place on Treat St in San Francisco home. It’s what you expect a casting facility to be like, with a huge downstairs studio for hopefuls to gather and strut their stuff, usually for the camera. Upstairs is not what everyone gets to see, but it’s where Nancy and team run the operation. You get the sense that this team really likes each and gets along, and there is certain rhythm and flow to the way they manage the huge amount of information that flows through. I guess the key to a casting business is actually liking people but also having a keen eye for what pops through the screen and lens. Also a fantastic memory doesn’t hurt. “We need a middle age man, lightly balding, glasses, slight paunch but not overweight who can do a New England accent and can carry a tune.” Says the client Nancy and team reply “we know just the guy”. Ok maybe it’s not always like that but this group cares about the people they represent, carry a huge amount of information in their head, and make these connections happen on an ongoing basis. Another feature of their facility is parking. This is San Francisco so that is always worth something.
These days Nancy is offering acting training classes for people at all levels through the Nancy Hayes Acting Studio. From beginner to professional there is something for everyone. If you are serious about the business it’s important to know how it works and what makes it tick. Nancy, along with a hand picked group of professionals, are teaching on a variety of subjects. More information can be found on their website. Also it’s a good idea to visit their website on a regular basis as they list the current castings.
Nancy Hayes Casting is an industry favorite and a great group to get to know. We are happy to include them on PHS and no question they should be on everyone’s short list.
