Dave Nelson is an artist. In another time you could imagine him at a Paris Café, or perhaps as a beat in early Greenwich Village, but it’s 2012 and his eclectic south of market studio is where he practices his craft. Dave’s medium is the art of sound design and as a supervising sound editor Dave often holds the very character of a film in his hands. It takes a particular knack to understand the essence of sound (and music) and be able to shape and texture it to fit a director’s vision. Often the mark of good sound design is when the audience doesn’t even notice it’s there. It so fits the specific events or overall feel of a film, documentary, game or stage event that it doesn’t call attention to itself, but rather connects a viewer to a piece in an emotional and direct way.
For 20 years Dave and the staff of Outpost have had the chance to work on almost every kind of sound design. Dave used to split his time between two different facilities, but now calls the Green Street location at Polarity Post his full time homea. At the Green Street location he has paired with Polarity Post to design and build a Dolby Certified Mix stage. Over the years Dave has worked on Dolby Stereo, Dolby 5.1, Dolby7.1, Stereo, Mono, 35mm, 16mm, television, stems, M&E and computer compression. Mixing is a world of details, and questions of what, how when, and at Outpost they know the answers.
In addition to sound design Dave also does original music, and has produced full length CD’s as well as original compositions for feature length films. Over the years Dave has produced, mixed and composed for musicians, filmmakers, and corporate clientele. His work has been acknowledged by many awards including; recognition by the Academy Awards, Sundance, and the Grammy’s. He has worked with such luminaries as Werner Herzog and Haskell Wexler, and his 20 year plus list of credits is something to marvel at. Be sure to visit their engaging websites where you can find more details about Dave’s long list of credits and specifics about the gear they use from top end consoles like Eupthonix CD, API and Tascam DM-3200, and host of microphones to suit the most demanding projects.
