Peter Kunz sadly passed this year. He was a modest man, and though he was a leader in his craft for more then 40 years, he tended to let his work speak for him, and not so much about himself. His credits included such high profile shows as Sex and the City, and Law and Order, and motion pictures such as Precious, State and Main, Godzilla, Spiderman I and I, Changing Lanes and much much more.
He was a renaissance man, in the sense that he loved to make things and took on all kinds of challenges. From pyrotechnics, mechanical effects, atmospheric effects, rigging, flying modelmaking. He did it all and he did it all well. He had been retired just the last few years and had been pursuing is second love which was creating artwork.
Over the last few years, the family torch has been passed to Johann Kunz. Johann has been making a name for himself and was the special effects coordinator for last years Academy Awards best picture Birdman. He also has worked on the Michael J. Fox TV show, the 2008 Sex and the City Movie and much much more.
So the Kunz family name is STILL synonymous with mechanical and special effects. Johann has learned from the best, and has had a catbird seat to this craft since before he could walk or talk. Of all the many crafts related to the film and tv business, this is one where credibility and reliability are paramount. The Kunz name is one you can take to the bank on safety, creativity, and family history. Peter has gone on to a better place, but his name and work lives on. We are proud to feature him on our site.
