You might mistake Forrest Patton of Kaleidosound for a professor, as he has the appearance of someone who has spent considerable time acquiring knowledge, and is in his element when he is sharing that knowledge with others. There are many in this town who have spent time working with Forrest, some of us remember his studio in the China Basin building back in the day. We did our voice overs and mixes, and tracked down our audio efx and more. But where Forrest really came into his own was finding just the right music to go with your piece. To say his knowledge and library are encyclopedic is an understatement. Beyond the beyond, other-worldly, impossible, no one has that, would be more apt descriptors. We don’t exaggerate. He has some rare collections of vintage audio that actually is more complete then one housed by the Smithsonian.
These days some have adopted the mistaken notion that getting the right music is a piece of cake. Heck the music libraries are even making things available through the web, and it’s many a producer who get’s it in their head “oh I can to that, and save some money”. These days that is true of more and more things, but the question is, at what price? Do we honestly think we can take on a body of information that takes a lifetime to master, and do it better than someone who has developed the craft over years of learning and trial and error and thousands of projects? The simple truth is we can’t. The problem that is looming large as technology shifts and things become more accessible, is that more and more material is looking and sounding more and more alike. If it is simple enough for you to do, then it is simple enough for everyone to do. And that is the heart of the problem. What Forrest brings to the table his not only an eclectic mix of library music, but a collection of things that no one else has, things that other folks don’t even know exist. Even more important he has a way of fitting them to you and your work personally and directly.
So what is becoming clear, is that as we move forward it is more difficult to separate ourselves from the competition. Kaleidosound is a place that is unique and can you bring you into a universe that you can’t possibly navigate without a guide. Forrest is just such a guide. We know him, we like him, we recommend him. So add him to your list of valuable local resources, and see what he can do for you on your next project. PHS says check him out.
